During these tough economic times and with the convenience of the Internet, many people have turned their entrepreneurial spirit, hobbies and side-lines into home businesses, and cottage industries. They conduct all their business from their home office, produce product in their garage, or basement and sometimes see clients in their living rooms.

However, no matter how industrious you are, one disaster can wipe out all your profits and even destroy your business. To ensure all the effort and money you have invested in your business doesn’t disappear in a disaster, it’s advisable to protect your business with the appropriate insurance. Insurance companies now offer policies that combine protection from all major property and liability risks into one package.

Popular among small and mid-sized business owners is the Business Owners Policy (BOP) which insurance companies use to combine policies that protect business owners from all major property and liability risks into one package.

What’s covered in a BOP:

Property insurance for buildings and contents owned by the company. There’s a Standard policy and a Special policy which is more comprehensive.

You can customize your policy by adding other coverages that include: Money and securities, valuable papers and records coverage, accounts receivable, property of others, computer and software coverage, excess liability and umbrella coverage is available in most cases (The above information is general only and is subject to the conditions, terms, and exclusions stated in the policies. Coverage may be subject to certain modifications or limitations.  Please read your actual policy forms for complete details on conditions and exclusions).

Business interruption insurance. This covers loss of income from fire or other disasters that disrupt business operations and can also include expenses incurred from operating at a temporary location.

Liability protection. This covers your company’s legal responsibility for the harm it may cause to others as a result of things that you and your employees do or fail to do in your business operations that may cause bodily injury or property damage due to defective products, faulty installations, and errors in services.

A Sense of Security.  Feel secure knowing your business is protected with a BOP.

What’s not covered in a BOP:

Professional Liability, etc. Professional Liability, Auto Insurance, Worker’s Compensation, or Health and Disability Insurance are NOT covered under BOPs. Separate insurance policies are needed to cover professional services, vehicles, and employees.
