Newly Engaged? Insure your Ring with a Floater
Posted by Roger Muller in Engagement Ring Insurance | December 2, 2011When I bring up floaters, I’m not talking about the spots in your eyes you sometimes get when you stand up too fast. In the Insurance industry, floaters are additional coverages for items you own that are of unusual value like baseball, coin, and Barbie doll collections, musical instruments, fur coats and most importantly, your jewelry
and heirlooms.
There is generally a $500 limit for theft of jewelry on a standard policy, and if you own expensive jewelry, some which are precious heirlooms, then I would advise talking with your insurance agent about floaters (also known as endorsements). A floater enhances your standard homeowner’s policy and:
Protects Special Collections. Family heirlooms like silverware, Hummels, baseball cards, rare coins, wine, stamps, sculptures and Barbies are insured as appraised.
Insures appraised items. Jewelry, furs, gold, silver, crystal, instruments, cameras, fine arts, antiques, guns, etc insured according to appraisal.
Delivers higher payouts on claims. Instead of standard homeowners policy payouts of $500 minus your deductible, floater payouts are based on replacement value.
Requires smaller deductible than standard policy. Floaters feature no deductibles.
Evaluates claims based on replacement value not depreciated value. Floaters provide fewer restrictions on claims regarding older items and payouts are based on replacement value not depreciation.
And for those very special items, like engagement rings, Chubb Insurance even offers special Engagement Ring Coverage. (Call Muller Insurance at 201-659-2403 to insure your engagement ring!)
Not everyone needs a separate policy, but if you own fine jewelry, a special collection, or just received a marriage proposal and a beautiful engagement ring, you might want to insure those cherished mementoes in case of loss or damage. At Muller Insurance, we help protect your treasures.
